Tips to use Excel effectively – For absolute beginners

Microsoft Excel is used to support various work environments. The use of Microsoft Excel worksheets are of a great help and assistance from basic math operations to making analysis. Hence, learning and excelling at Excel is a great way to successfully perform your tasks while saving your time and efforts to a great extent. Here are some tips that might help you save your time and efforts while using Microsoft Excel.

Keyboard shortcuts or Using shortcut keys: It’s of great benefit to use shortcut keys while using Microsoft excel, as you can not only save your time, but also your efforts that are required to apply different ways in performing your tasks. Some of the shortcut methods are as follows: Ctrl+c for copying, Ctrl+V for pasting, Ctrl+s for saving the file while Alt+D is used to delete the rows and columns. Many more can be explored while you learn and improve the skills of Microsoft Excel.

Excel Formulas: There are several instances when you need to make calculations. Microsoft Excel allows you to enter various formulas that in turn produces the desired results. There are four basic formulas, + addition; -subtraction; *multiplication; / division. Before you assign the formula to any cell of Excel, you need to type the equals sin(=), and press enter after you type the formula. This will give the results as per your formulas. Not only that, you can link the formulas with other cells or worksheets in the same workbook. Besides, you can refer the data in other worksheets. Assuming that you have two worksheets, A and B, the cells of worksheet (A) may be used to refer to the cells of worksheet(B).

Creating tables: Creating tables is another way to save your time and efforts. You can make use of tables for various calculations and as per the type of data. You can create as many tables as you need. By creating tables for your calculations or computations, you can maintain accuracy. It also enables you to arrange and make good formats of your data.

Data Validation: One of best features of Microsoft Excel is data validation. Data Validation is a way through which you can make restrictions on the data that’s to be used. Not only you can configure it, but also you can prevent your users from entering data that is not acceptable for a specific range. This may be done by providing messages to stop users if they enter invalid data.

To create a basic function:
Select the cell that will contain the function. In our example, we’ll select cell C11. …
Type the equals sign (=) and enter the desired function name. …
Enter the cell range for the argument inside parentheses. …
Press Enter on your keyboard.
