Organizational Development, being generally shortened to, OD is a field that involves research, theory and practice . It aims at better changes and performance of people in the organization. It is concerned with expanding knowledge and effectiveness of people in order that the predefined business objectives and goals may be accomplished in a manner that are expected.
The basic objective behind bringing organizational development is to increase organizational performance and keep the functioning state of business organization sound in the long run, while working on the development of standard organizational structure and facilitating people to attain predetermined goals and objectives successfully. The process of organizational development involves assessing organizational culture in which employees work, identifying problems or obstacles hindering success of a business and suggest their solutions while stressing on employee motivation, change and development plans.
It must be borne in mind that organizational development cannot take place by itself, but it needs to be considered on the basis of some necessary aspects that can make organizational development successfully in a business.
A business manager must be in favor of innovative thinking and encourage his employees accordingly. In this way, not only his innovative mind set will help him bring better changes for an organization, but it also aids greatly in developing the overall performance of a business organization. He should make use of technology and motivate the employees to improve technological aspects of a business, so that they can perform their duties in a more effective and efficient manner.
If a business organization invests money in employee development plans to educate them, train them and let them gain more knowledge and skills, in fact, it invests in itself to gain better returns in course of time. This is because by training and improving the employee performance, it actually improves overall performance of a business organization. In this way, it is necessary to identify training needs,suggest and implement specific training and development programs for the employees, as it leads to create greater efficiencies and enhance their competence level.
Since the goal of organizational development is to improve the organizational culture and performance so as to attain stated ends successfully, it is important to work on change management, in the sense, focusing on the need for bringing better change.
It also necessitates making strong efforts towards team building and developing an effective feedback system through which the factors that create bottlenecks can be identified and overcome successfully – whereby allowing management to make organizational development successfully.
